Established in 1943, this National Wildlife Refuge is the oldest in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. With over 2,000 acres, this refuge was originally created as a migratory bird sanctuary. Today the refuge protects hundreds of plant and wildlife species and attracts thousands of winter tourists very season.

Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is a Registered National Natural Landmark and It was one of the first federal areas to be given this recognition.

Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is located along an east-west and north-south juncture which is a major migratory route for numerous species of birds. Nicknamed the ‘jewel of the National Wildlife Refuge System', the area is right in the middle of a biological diversity that offers visitors viewing opportunities of wildlife species not seen in other parts of the country.

The refuge's Visitor Center has a gift shop and is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and as you approach you'll see and hear a variety birds sounding off as you enter this rare tropical world.

There are 14 miles of hiking trails you can venture down. Among them are Chachalaca Trail, Cattail Lakes Trail, Pintail Lakes Trail and Tree Tower Overlook.

Every winter you can ride the open-air tram that covers the 7-mile wildlife drive by local guides and features a visit to the historic cemetery and a view of the Rio Grande River.
The winter schedule is November through April with departure times at 9:30 am, 12 noon and 2 pm. The tram rides are closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Tears Day.

Entrance fees are charged by the vehicle and fees are charged based on the group or individuals entering. There is NO CHARGE the first Sunday of every month!
