Resaca de la Palma in Brownsville

Every Tuesday and Saturday. Travel by foot or on our new and amazingly quiet electric trams to reach our destinations. We have many different trails to venture onto that are relatively flat and ADA accessible. With 1,200 acres of lush, riparian woodlands we will also be birding by ear. You are encouraged to bring scopes and binoculars so that you can really reach into those dense areas where birds take advantage of abundant shelter and food. We offer binocular rentals at our gift shop for your convenience should you not have your own, and sell insect repellant, hats, hiking sticks as well as other items you may need. Ending times vary depending on trails taken, but tours are usually 1-1/2-hours long. Visit the web page here>>

The Count of Padre Island

The following is an excerpt of Old Indio, Last of the Karankawa Indians of Padre Island and other short stories by Steve Hathcock -

A special telegram to the Philadelphia Times, (June 12-1893) from Rockport, Texas read, “On Laguna Padre, a long lozenge-shaped island lying off the coast just below this point lives a singular family known to the people about by the name of Gonsalvo, though it is generally understood that the father has a far different, and it is suspected, a more illustrious name. There are in all seven in the household and although the oldest child is now approaching manhood, not one of the children has been on the mainland except perhaps to run into the harbor in case of an approaching storm. The wife alone visits the shore, her husband never going within half a mile of any of the human kind if it can be avoided and it is said Senor Gonsalvo has not left the Island itself for the last twenty years.” Read On>>

Nuevo Progreso Report November 30

Nuevo Progreso ReportThe first thing that strikes you as you cross the bridge is the absence of the military. They had been parked at the bridge for some two years or so, searching cars and trucks, looking professional, while at the same time maintaining their aura of intimidation and potential for sudden violence from any real or perceived threat. They were simply gone. There had been nothing on the news about it. The sandbag bunkers were dismantled, except for a forlorn gun emplacement as you would enter the town. Read More>>

Somehow, the captain of the ship managed to stay ahead of the tempest, but near dusk of the third day the storm caught up to the Texas Ranger. Twenty five-foot waves and a rising wind forced the boat near the shore. Read the article at my website here>>

Recognizing Treasures

It seems as if I have always dabbled in antiques. My folks owned a small second hand store when I was a teenager and I would oftentimes bid for them at auctions. By the time I was old enough to go out on my own in the world I had learned enough about antiques that I was able to discern real bargains from wishful thinking. As a result, I was able to supplement my income by “picking” or buying at auctions, flea markets and rummage sales and then reselling to dealers. I remember an estate auction I attended one time in rural Wisconsin. Read More Here>>

The Lost City of the RGV

Clarksville, Texas was one of three so called, lost cities, located near the mouth of the Rio Grande in the 1860s. There was Brazos de Santiago on Brazos Island and Bagdad on the Rio Grande located on the Mexican side of the great river. Between the two, lay Clarksville.
